Many children don't even know they suffer from mental health issues, so it's inexcusably left untreated. Not only does it hold our children back in life, it can tragically end in the loss of their life, or lives of others.
We should be educating our kids how to detect symptoms at young age; particularly early on in grade school so they can get the treatment they need, whether it be medication, counseling, or both. It should be rare that it goes unnoticed
By leaving kids to their own devices, they typically self-medicate, which often leads to long term prison sentences for various degrees of violent crime. There's no excuse for having to tell a parent they lost their child to something that could've easily been prevented. It's not fair to the child or their families when they end up victims themselves -- victims of circumstance.
Mental health illness should never go untreated.

Bill to Require DOC Mental Health Discharge Planning: HB 4700 was passed by the Michigan House of Representatives on Dec 10, 2019. It would require the DOC to create a prerelease mental health discharge plan before a prisoner who is receiving mental health services or mental health prescription medicine is paroled. The DOC could seek consultative services from the Department of Health and Human Services in creating a plan for a person.
